Press article: Tree Bungle

3 July 2018

I was recently quoted in a Press story about the choice of Liriodendron trees planted under a cantilevered section of Christchurch’s new Justice Precinct. It is a bit of a sorry tale as I’m reasonably certain that the variety chosen was Liriodendron tulipifera fastigiata, an upright variety that grows to a mature height of 12-17 metres. Unfortunately, the cantilever is far lower than this. As lovely as this tree is, it’s obviously just not suitable for this position.

Of course, we all make mistakes, and hopefully this planting situation can be remedied before it’s too late for the trees. Sadly, this is an example of the need to make informed choices when planning your own garden or outdoor space. Unless we choose the right plants for the right place they just aren’t going to thrive, as is the case in many other areas throughout the city.

However, help is at hand. There are plenty of horticultural, garden and plant experts in Christchurch and this could be a great opportunity for some professional consultation and a review of how our city could look its personal green best, while getting it right the first time and avoiding costly taxpayer mistakes. Guys, you know how to reach me.
